With so much talk, worry, and upheaval about CPSIA (the new law passed that affects every product manufactured for children under the age of 12) there has been a lot of misinformation going around. As the upcoming deadline of 2/10/09 approaches talk about CPSIA is hitting the airwaves, local tv, national publications, and the internet like a storm. There are small pockets of informed groups kicking up the dirt in DC with petitions and letters, but still too many are not informed, including retailers and manufacturers. Today Forbes has a fantastic article that is well worth reading. It is a quick summary of what is happening with no sugar coating. This is a good place to start if you want to understand the basic effects of the new law. 

Did you know that thousands of American artisans and  family  businesses that manufacture natural children’s products may go out of business on 2/10/09 if the CPSIA is not amended?  Ironically the law was put into affect to protect our children from toxic toys manufactured by big corporations  (usually manufactured in China). However, the new law that requires enormous amounts of unreasonable testing will end up putting natural and organic manufacturers and retailers out of business.

Go Natural Baby supports protecting our children from harmful and toxic products, but is it necessary to test certified organic cotton apparel, handmade wooden toys, natural woolen goods, and paper for lead? These tests are very costly and many will go out of business or prices will soar. Oh, and one more thing to consider is that your selection of toys, garments, and other children’s products will be vastly limited, more expensive, and be of the “cookie cutter” variety.
